JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — He hasn’t even announced his candidacy for governor yet, and already there are fellow Republicans calling for Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder to pull out of the race.

State Representative Kevin Elmer, R-Nixa, in a letter to newspaper editors, says Kinder’s “irresponsible decisions in his personal life have impugned his ability to lead publicly from a principled position.”

In the wake of controversy over Kinder’s past relationship with a St. Louis area stripper, there have been behind the scenes rumblings about Kinder’s ability to beat Gov. Jay Nixon in the 2012 general election. Kinder has admitted that he visited strip clubs during his time as a State Senator in the 1990’s. But he has denied having an improper relationship with a woman he was photographed with in a St. Louis bar earlier this year.

Kinder has not yet officially declared his candidacy for governor, although it appears a certainty that he will run.

Late last week, a key southwest Missouri Republican donor announced he would not give money to Kinder’s campaign.

Elmer, a freshman representative from the Springfield area, asks party leadership and donors “to stand tall” against Kinder’s candidacy.
