Highway fatalities hit 62 year low in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — For the first time since 1949, fewer than 800 Missourians lost their lives on the state’s roads and highways in 2011.
The Missouri Highway Patrol Tuesday announced its final fatality figures for 2011. As of midnight January 1, 773 Missouri residents lost their lives in traffic crashes. That’s down 5 percent from 2010 when there were 821 traffic deaths.
In a statement to the media, the patrol said the final figure may be slightly higher if any persons injured in accidents in 2011 die due to the injuries they suffered.
The patrol credits increased safety enforcement efforts along with increased public awareness campaigns for the decrease in deaths. The patrol also credits safety improvements, such as safety cable barriers in medians, increased safety features in automobiles, and better emergency response to traffic crashes.
