Although the campaign for next year’s Missouri gubernatorial election has not even officially begun, the top two candidates have been racking in substantial funds.
On Friday, Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon and Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder – who has yet to formally announce his campaign to unseat Nixon in 2012 – both announced their fundraising totals for the last quarter.
Nixon outraised his likely GOP rival by about $400,000 for the three months that ended on June 30, raising about $1.4 million. Kinder’s campaign brought in just under $1 million during that same period of time.
Both candidates are long time fixtures of Jefferson City politics. Nixon is two and a half years into his first term as governor after serving four terms as the state attorney general. Kinder is in the midst of his second term as lieutenant governor after serving in the state senate since 1992.
Although the Kinder has yet to make an official campaign announcement, Missouri Republican Party Executive Director Lloyd Smith said he would be the candidate to beat for the GOP nomination.
“The fundraising has been going very well so far,” Smith said. “These are two big names and I think you’re going to see well-financed campaign on both sides.”
