GOP Senate Race: GOTV and Early Voting on the Line

Which GOP Senate hopeful has the best ground game? That’s one of the key questions going into today’s final push to get out the vote; what campaigns call GOTV. With the race between Jon Bruning , Deb Fischer and Don Stenberg up for grabs—and voter turnout across Nebraska expected to be low, 21 percent in Douglas County alone, GOTV is critical

Phipps Denies Breaking Law

Despite talk of a lawsuit forcing him to reopen dozens of polling places by the May 15 Primary, Douglas County Election Commissioner Dave Phipps  says, “I don’t know how I could possibly do it.” In an extensive interview (see below) with Nebraska Watchdog , Phipps also dismissed any suggestion that he broke the  Nebraska Public Records Law when he sent out voting information he knew was incorrect. Phipps’ comments are just one of several developments today in his money saving plan to close nearly half the polling places throughout Douglas County.   Governor Dave Heineman’s office is distancing the governor from the controversy regarding a March 2 email on the closings which was sent from Secretary of State John Gale to Heineman’s chief of staff.  Democrats have criticized Phipps, a Republican who was appointed by Heineman, arguing his plan will leave many inner city voters—who are more likely to vote for Democrats—unable to cast their ballots in May and on Election Day in November
